Agonic and Hedonic Typology
Author: Christopher Chayban
In this post, I will be talking about illuminating the agonic and hedonic societies in relation to Typology. To be honest, at first, I thought this was a primitive matchup between thinking and feeling. But then I realized that actually, it is a primitive matchup between two kinds of feeling.
The agonic seems to be related to Introverted feeling in which Stevens even says that failure in affiliation is associated with the Introverted personality (The Talking Cure pg.80). The hierarchal structures are a matter of feeling because they decide the value and worth of each person and rank them in corresponding order. A primitive Anima/Animus function of Extraverted Thinking!
The hedonic, if it wasn’t obvious already, seems like the Extraverted Feeling par excellence with the egalitarian approach of attachment, affiliation, care-giving/receiving and altruism (The Talking Cure pg.78). One is the opposing shadow of the other. This is how evolutionary psychology can contribute to Jung’s typology!
